Are you in charge of your mind, or is your mind in charge of you?

Are You Running Your Mind, or Is Your Mind Running You?

I’m Heidi

On this blog I share insights, guidance, and educational resources about hypnosis, healing, and the connection between mind, body, and awareness, to help you better understand yourself and your experiences.

Really, who’s in charge?

Have you ever tried to intellectually argue with a panic attack? Or tried to “logic” your way out of a sudden wave of jealousy, anger, or deep-seated worry?

“It’s fine,” you tell your brain. “There is absolutely no reason to be stressed right now.”

Meanwhile, your heart is beating like a drum solo, your chest is tight, and your mind is happily spinning a worst-case scenario script worthy of an Oscar. We find ourselves trapped in an endless loop of thinking, thinking, thinking—exhaustively trying to use our conscious thoughts to fix our feelings.

Here is the cold, hard truth: you cannot think your way out of a subconscious pattern.

Why? Because the conscious thinking mind is not where your patterns actually live. They live much deeper—in the profound, quiet space that QHHT founder Dolores Cannon called The Subconscious (or the SC)—the part of our consciousness that holds unlimited wisdom and healing capacity.

To truly alter your reality and clear the thoughts that no longer serve you, you have to learn how to run your own mind, rather than letting your mind run you. And the key to doing that is shifting from your head to your heart-mind connection.

Bypassing the “Security Guard” of Your Mind

To understand who is running the show, we have to look at how our brain is wired. Day to day, your conscious, analytical mind acts like a hyper-vigilant security guard standing at the entrance of your brain. This guard isn’t evil; he’s just deeply obsessed with keeping things predictable. To him, predictable equals safe—even if predictable means you stay stuck in the same miserable loops of thinking and reacting forever.

To step into “the quantum”—a space of infinite possibility and rapid transformation—you have to get that guard to stand down and take a coffee break.

When we quiet this analytical guard, we shift our brainwaves into the theta band (4–8 Hz). This is the ultimate mental sweet spot of deep absorption, vivid memory processing, and high receptivity to change. According to neuroscientists at Stanford, three major shifts occur in the brain when we enter this state:

  • The “Worry Center” Quiets: Activity decreases in the salience network (the brain’s internal threat monitor). You stop frantically scanning your environment for danger and finally let yourself absorb the present moment.
  • The Mind-Body Volume is Cranked Up: Your executive brain strengthens its connection to the insula—the region that processes bodily sensations. Suddenly, your thoughts gain a direct, VIP hotline to your physical state.
  • The Ego’s Megaphone is Unplugged: Connections drop between your executive brain and the Default Mode Network (DMN)—the system responsible for mind-wandering, self-reflection, and keeping your rigid, dusty story of “who I am” on repeat.

When you unplug the DMN, you disconnect your actions from your self-conscious ego. You stop overanalyzing your life and finally begin feeling your way through it.

“Raising Your Vibration” (Getting Heart-Centered)

In spiritual circles, we talk about “raising our vibration” to alter our reality. In scientific terms, this is actually the cultivation of Fundamental Peace.

Rather than a fleeting, temporary emotion, Fundamental Peace is a dynamic, highly flexible neural state of emotional regulation and self-integration. It is the ultimate heart-centered way of living, and it relies on training four practical habits:

  1. Flexible Attentional Control: The ability to intentionally direct and hold your attention where you choose, rather than letting your mind hijack you into a worry spiral on autopilot.
  2. Emotional Coherence: Welcoming and integrating every emotion, rather than trying to run away from or suppress the uncomfortable ones with logic.
  3. Reduced Self-Referential Rigidity: Holding your identity lightly. Instead of declaring, “I am just an anxious person,” you realize your identity is fluid and completely reprogrammable.
  4. Compassionate Self-Awareness: Becoming a kind, curious observer of your own triggers and fears, rather than using them as a stick to beat yourself with.

Why Your Brain “Glitches” (Reactive vs. Receptive States)

We can’t clear a pattern we don’t first understand. A trigger is essentially your brain’s over-enthusiastic home security system mistaking a gentle breeze for an active home invasion.

When something stressful happens in the present, your brain pattern-matches it to a past memory or trauma. It immediately throws you into a defensive, controlling “fight-or-flight” state. Trying to aggressively force yourself to “calm down” while in this state is like screaming at a smoke detector to stop ringing—it only increases the internal panic.

The secret is to shift into a parasympathetic, receptive state—a state of open connection and soft curiosity.

When you soften and get heart-centered, your body is primed to release oxytocin, the hormone of safety and bonding. Oxytocin acts like a soothing weighted blanket for your amygdala (the brain’s panic button), allowing your emotional control centers to come back online and safely dissolve the old fear.

The 3-Step “Heart-Mind Reset” Daily Practice

You don’t need to be in a formal hypnosis session to start running your own mind. You can use this simple three-step tool the absolute second you feel overthinking or triggers starting to hijack you:

Step 1: The Posture of Receptivity

The moment you feel anxiety rising, physically open your hands—palms up, with your forearms slightly elevated.

For thousands of generations, the human body has been conditioned to associate open palms with physical safety, receiving, and social cooperation. By adopting this physical posture, you send a direct biological message to your nervous system saying: “There is no physical threat here. You can safely lower your guard.”

Step 2: Speak in “Polite Requests”

If you command your mind to “Stop worrying!”, your subconscious will fiercely push back. This is a psychological phenomenon called reactance. The subconscious mind resists authoritarian demands.

Instead, speak to your inner mind with the polite, respectful syntax of a gentle request:

  • “Will you help me see this situation in a different, safer light?”
  • “Will you show me how today is different from what happened back then?”
  • “Will you help me find the lesson hidden inside this moment?”

Your subconscious mind listens to this language because it feels respected, not threatened.

Step 3: Create a “Novelty Mismatch”

This is where the actual reprogramming happens through a neurological process called memory reconsolidation.

When you recall a triggered, uncomfortable memory, but simultaneously flood your physical body with a deep, heart-centered sense of peace (by dropping into a calm meditation or vividly remembering a time you felt wildly loved and safe), you create a novelty mismatch.

Your brain’s old program expects danger, but your body is actively reporting safety and love. This contradiction creates a “prediction error” that temporarily unlocks the neural pathway holding the old story in place—giving you a magical, brief window to literally rewrite the file and alter your reality.

Take Back the Reins

Your mind and your physical body are not your enemies; they have just been protecting you the only way they knew how. But protection and healing are two very different things. You do not have to let outdated, frantic thinking loops run the show anymore.

When you learn to step beyond the conscious, analytical guard and lead from the heart, you finally take back the reins of your life.

If you’re ready to make that quantum leap, quiet the overthinking, and rewrite your subconscious programs, then let’s get started.
